As a rental property owner, you need to pay proper attention to what type of door lock you use for your property. It is important to provide adequate safety measures for tenants living on your property.
You will typically need to either re-key or change your lock after each tenant turnover. This can get expensive over time, as it increases the upkeep cost of your rental home. This is even more applicable for those with a high tenant turnover rate, such as an Airbnb or homestays rented on a month-to-month basis.
To help you save money as well as keep your tenants and property safe, we made a list of a few effective door lock solutions you may consider for your rental property.
Rental Property Door Locks Solutions
- Keypad Locks
Keypad locks have of late become a highly popular option for residential homes, apartments and offices. These locks use a keypad with numbers that can be used to set a passcode that only you and your tenant know. There are different designs on keypad locks. Some use only the numbers template whereas others come with a key as well. So, with keypad locks, all you usually have to do after a tenant moves out is simply reset the passcode and you’re done. Take note, too, that a majority of these lock devices let you set more than one passcode for the lock. This means you can use a backup passcode which will come handy if it ever happens that your tenant forgets the passcode they set and lock themselves out.
- Landlord Locks
This is another easy and effective solution for property managers and owners especially, just as the name suggests. These otherwise standard-looking locks actually come with an inner cylinder that can be changed or re-keyed as many times as you want. When you purchase a landlord lock, you will typically receive one or more backup cylinders. So, once a tenant moves out, you can easily replace the existing cylinder with a backup. If you have more than one rental property, you could actually rotate the cylinders between your properties. If you run out of backups, you can usually send a cylinder back to the company which will then re-key it for you for a small fee. Another great feature of these locks is that you can receive a master key for all the locks or inner cylinders you order, so no fidgeting with a handful of keys!
- Smart Key Locks
These smart keys let you re-key your lock all by yourself. Once a tenant vacates your property, you can re-key the lock with the use of the Smart Learning tool. All you need to do is insert the current key and the learning tool together, and then the tool will wipe out the lock’s current memory. Next, you put the new key in and the tool will reset its memory and ‘teach’ the lock the new key. And that’s all there is!
